  • 2018, Jan 15 - Maghi festival. New Year of Nepal in Tundikhel through the day. The festival had started from Kathmandu Durbar Square.
    Nepal
    Noémie Repetto
    LePictorium_0173460.jpg
Maghe Sankranti is the first day of the month of Magh of Bikram Sambat. Magh is the tenth month of the year.

Sankranti is the Sanskrit word in Eastern Astrology which refers to the transmigration of the Sun from one Rashi (sign of the zodiac) to another. In very simple, the word sankranti is the first day of the Nepali calendar. Then obviously, there are 12 sankrantis in a year. Makar Sankranti is the transition of the Sun from Dhanu rashi (Sagittarius) to Makara rashi (Capricorn).

In Hindu Astrology the sun position during the year is divided into 12 rashis (zodiac signs). It is however, very difficult to reconcile among Bikram Sambat months, Zodiac months and lunar calendar's months. While the traditional Calendar is based on lunar positions, Sankranti is a solar event. So dates of all Hindu festivals keep changing as per the Gregorian calendar and so do the Makar Sankranti too.

Makar Sankranti is the festival of the Sun God. The Sun God is the symbol of power, divinity and wisdom. The Sun God is worshiped in this festival.

Maghe Sankranti is also called Maghi. Maghi is for the New year of Tharu Community of Nepal.

Medical assistance is expensive and inaccessible for a major part of the population.
In Avdiivka, people almost always hear gunshots. Three years ago, this city of eastern Ukraine has become the battleground of an endless war between the Ukrainian army and Russian-nacked rebels. It was taken by the rebels in April 2014 before being taken back by the Ukrainian army in July. It still remains the "hottest spot" as noticed by a member of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Pilgrim women depositing their wishes in the church.
Saint George is one of the figures who has led to most cross-fertilisations between Christians and Muslims in the eastern Mediterranean. Off the coast of Istanbul, on the summit of the island of Büyükada, is the Greek Orthodox monastery of Saint George.
Celebrations of the saint’s feast day on 23 April draw as many as 100,000 people, many of them Muslims. Most of them come to make wishes, which take various ritual forms. Aya Yorgi is popular because he is reputed to be efficacious and makes no distinction between Christians and Muslims.
The monastery of Saint George is a "shared holy places" by believers from different faith.

Every year for the celebration of Lag Ba'Omer, Tunisian Jews -who emigrated in the twentieth century in Europe, North America and Israel- go in pilgrimage to the Ghriba synagogue in the island of Djerba. In addition to the religious dimension, this event is also a pilgrimage of memory. The peaceful "convivencia" with Muslims is valued, despite the attack of Al Qaeda in 2002. Today, the site is still frequented by some Muslim and remains one of the last cases of peaceful interaction between Jews and Muslims. It is a "shared holy place"
