The forgotten women of the marine industry

Étel. Pierre, 18 years old, also contributes to thwarting the preconceived ideas about the fisherman's profession. Born in Paris to an absent father and an opera singer mother, his career path does not resemble the more common one here, where the child, year in, year out, reproduces the parental pattern by pursuing maritime studies. And he does not hesitate to confide in us about the hard work. "At my first tide, I lost 5 kg because of seasickness. I'm not ashamed to say it. All sailors get sick one day," he explains. Unrecognised at sea, where they are still rare, and on land, where they are mainly involved in processing and selling fish, women are confronted with a division of labour that remains very gendered in this sector. But the new generation could bring a boost of equality. Inshore fisherwomen, spinners, students at the maritime high school, here is their daily life in Lorient.
