The forgotten women of the marine industry
Sadak Souici / Le Pictorium
Caption :
Lorient fish auction. Throughout the night, the fish are identified according to species, weight, size, origin and the name of the boat in a warehouse where about forty employees are working. Rolling benches are used to move the boxes of fish between the rooms. After this first stage, the sales follow, where fishmongers, restaurant owners, fishmongers and foreign buyers press their remote controls to bid for the best price. Unrecognised at sea, where they are still rare, and on land, where they are mainly involved in processing and selling fish, women are confronted with a division of labour that remains very gendered in this sector. But the new generation could bring a boost of equality. Inshore fisherwomen, spinners, students at the maritime high school, here is their daily life in Lorient.
