Sadak Souici / Le Pictorium - Conakry clashes following banned protests - 05/03/2020 - Guinea / Conakry / Conakry - a tired policeman leaving a demonstration in a police SUV. The Guinean opposition called for a gigantic demonstration across the capital, Conakry, on Thursday, March 5. However, the government had not yet given its authorization that day and the opposition backed down at midday, calling for a "dead city" movement, where no one was leaving. But the Wanindara district, a well-known suburb of the capital, had dozens or even hundreds of protesters clashing with local police. In the morning, the police divisions were preparing to go to Wanindara and crossed the whole city to finally park near the demonstration site with small trucks carrying troops. Tear gas has been used more than 15 times against young demonstrators throwing stones. At least 2 police officers have been injured and the opposition is following cases of injured and even dead protesters, but this has not yet been verified by local authorities.
